The High Desert Escape: Discovering Tesuque Outpost

Tesuque Outpost  |  Santa Fe Vacation Rental  |  tesuqueoutpost.com

There is a particular kind of place that reveals itself slowly,  that earns its hold on you over hours rather than minutes, that gets better the longer you stay and quieter the longer you listen. Tesuque Outpost is that place.

Perched on a hillside on 2.5 private acres in the village of Tesuque, just north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Outpost overlooks the lush Tesuque River valley with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains filling the horizon in every direction. It is not, strictly speaking, a hotel. It is three individually designed casitas,  each with its own personality, its own art, its own outdoor space,  that together form one of the most thoughtfully curated vacation rental compounds in the American Southwest.

If you have never stayed somewhere that felt like a genuine discovery, Tesuque Outpost is where that changes.

There is a particular kind of place that reveals itself slowly,  that earns its hold on you over hours rather than minutes. Tesuque Outpost is that place.

The Setting: Where the High Desert Opens Up

Santa Fe sits at 7,000 feet above sea level,  high enough that the air is noticeably cleaner, the sky noticeably bluer, and the light noticeably different from anything you experience at a lower elevation. The village of Tesuque sits a few miles north of the city, where the landscape opens into sweeping river valley views and the density of downtown Santa Fe gives way to piñon woodland, native sage, and the quiet that only comes when you are genuinely away from things.

Tesuque Outpost’s hilltop position means you wake up to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, whether you are sitting on your private casita deck, making coffee in the kitchen, or simply looking out the window. That view does not get old. Guests who stay for a week report sitting on the deck for long periods doing nothing in particular,  and finding it to be the most restorative thing they have done in years.

Good to know → Tesuque Outpost is located directly across from the world-famous Santa Fe Opera,  making it the ideal base for opera season visitors who want seclusion and proximity in equal measure.

Three Casitas, Three Personalities

What distinguishes Tesuque Outpost from a typical vacation rental,  or even a boutique hotel,  is that each of the three casitas has been individually designed and furnished by host Mo Elliott, a retired outdoor apparel designer with a lifetime of global travel behind him. The result is spaces that feel genuinely lived-in and personally considered, rather than staged for a listing photo.

Casita E is an intimate one-bedroom retreat with a wood-burning fireplace, a Moravian star pendant, vintage-style appliances in a characterful kitchen, and antique folk art that tells stories of far-off places. Casita F is a two-bedroom space with more room to stretch,  warmed by its own fireplace, rich with Ethiopian icon paintings and kilim textiles, and opening onto a shared outdoor terrace with that defining mountain view. Casita H, the newest addition, brings a deep teal accent wall, brass lantern sconces, global textile art, and a kiva fireplace that makes it the most distinctly Santa Fe of the three.

Each casita has a fully equipped kitchen, a private entrance, its own outdoor seating area, and access to the shared grounds,  trails, stone terraces, and the kind of natural surroundings that make stepping outside feel like stepping into something much larger than yourself.

Each casita feels genuinely lived-in and personally considered,  not staged for a listing photo. That is the difference a designer-traveler host makes.

Who is Tesuque Outpost for

Tesuque Outpost is for the traveler who has stayed in enough vacation rentals to know exactly what they do not want. No generic furniture. No mass-produced art. No feeling of having slept in a hundred different versions of the same space.

It is for couples looking for a romantic high desert getaway with privacy, a wood-burning fireplace, and a mountain view from the bed. It is for groups and families who want to travel together while each having their own space; the three casitas can be booked individually or together, accommodating up to 12 guests across the compound. It is for Santa Fe Opera attendees who want to step out into the desert after a performance and feel like they are somewhere truly extraordinary.

And it is for anyone who has ever looked out at the mountains and felt something shift,  who knows that certain places do something to you that other places simply cannot. Tesuque Outpost is one of those places.
